How Much Does a Website Cost in Australia?
What Australian small businesses actually pay for a website, upfront and ongoing, without the sales pitch.

Website quotes in Australia range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands for what sounds like the same thing. The range is real, but it's explainable — and once you know what drives it, comparing quotes gets a lot easier.
What you'll pay, by route
- DIY builder: $20–$60 a month, plus 20–60 hours of your own time. Cheapest in cash, dearest in hours.
- Freelancer or small studio: roughly $1,500–$6,000 for a small business site of eight to twenty pages.
- Agency: $5,000–$20,000+, usually with strategy, copywriting and design work included.
- Managed monthly: a modest setup fee, then an ongoing amount that includes hosting, maintenance and changes.
The ongoing costs quotes leave out
- Domain name: around $15–$30 a year.
- Hosting: $10–$50 a month for a small business site.
- Security, backups and platform updates.
- Content changes — often billed hourly once the build is done.
- SEO, if you want to be found rather than just exist.
Add three years of those and the "cheap" build often isn't. Compare total cost over three years, not the first invoice.

What actually drives the price
- Number of pages. A one-pager and a twenty-page site are different jobs.
- Who writes the words. Copywriting is often the biggest hidden cost.
- Custom design vs template. Custom costs more and rarely converts better for a local business.
- Functionality. Online booking, payments, logins, e-commerce — each adds real cost.
- SEO setup. Proper titles, structure and location pages take time.
What's worth paying for
Structure, speed and content. A well-structured, fast site with real photos and a page per service will out-earn a beautiful site with none of that, every time. Fancy animation is the first thing to cut from a tight budget.
Trade-specific numbers are in tradie website costs in Australia, and the pricing structures are compared in what's fair vs a rip-off.
Before you accept a website quote
- How many pages, and which ones?
- Who writes the content — you or them?
- Is hosting, SSL and backup included, and for how long?
- What does a change cost after launch?
- Do I own the domain and content?
- Is anything set up for Google — titles, sitemap, structure?
- What's the total over three years?
My own pricing is deliberately simple — a set setup fee, then a weekly managed fee covering hosting, updates and changes with no lock-in. See small business website packages for what's included.

SEO varies enormously depending on your website, your market and who you're competing against, so there's no fixed package. Tell me what you do and where you work, and I'll tell you honestly what's realistic.
Talk to Mike About SEOCommon questions
- Why are website quotes so different?
- Mostly page count, who writes the content, and whether ongoing hosting, maintenance and changes are included. Two quotes for 'a website' are often quoting very different amounts of work.
- Is a cheap website worth it?
- It can be, if it's structured properly and loads fast. It isn't if you can never change it, it's slow, or it's built so Google can't rank any page but the home page.
