How Long Does Google Take to Index a New Website?
What indexing means, how long it usually takes, and how to check and speed it up.

Indexing and ranking get confused constantly. Indexing just means Google has your page on file. Ranking is whether it shows up above anyone else's. You need the first before the second is even a question.
| Situation | Typical indexing time | How to help it along |
|---|---|---|
| Brand-new domain and site | Days to a few weeks | Search Console, sitemap, a couple of real links |
| New page on an existing site | Hours to days | Link to it from an existing page |
| Rebuilt site, same domain | Days | Redirect old URLs, resubmit the sitemap |
| Page changed | Days to weeks | Request re-indexing in Search Console |
How to check whether you're indexed
- Search site:yourdomain.com.au — anything listed is indexed.
- In Google Search Console, open the page indexing report. It tells you which pages are indexed and why others aren't.
- Use the URL inspection tool for a specific page.
What speeds indexing up
- A verified Search Console property with a submitted sitemap.
- Internal links — every page should be reachable from the menu or another page.
- A few genuine external links: your Google Business Profile, social pages, a supplier or association listing.
- A fast, technically clean site.
- Fresh, genuinely different content on each page.
What holds it up
- A noindex tag or robots.txt block left over from development.
- Orphan pages nothing links to.
- Thin or duplicated pages — Google may crawl them and decline to index.
- A brand-new domain with nothing pointing at it.
- Server errors or very slow responses.

Indexed but still not visible?
That's a ranking problem, not an indexing one — different fixes. Start with why your website isn't showing up on Google and how long SEO takes.
Every website I build launches with a sitemap, clean page titles and Search Console set-up as part of the SEO foundations included in the package.
Want to Improve Your Google Visibility?
SEO varies enormously depending on your website, your market and who you're competing against, so there's no fixed package. Tell me what you do and where you work, and I'll tell you honestly what's realistic.
Talk to Mike About SEOCommon questions
- Do I need to submit my site to Google?
- Not strictly — it'll be found eventually — but verifying it in Search Console and submitting a sitemap is free, quick, and makes the process much more predictable.
- Will changing my website remove me from Google?
- Not if URLs stay the same or are redirected properly. Problems come from changing every URL without redirects.
