Handyman is one of the steadiest small businesses going - every suburb has a permanent backlog of gates, decks, patch-ups and flat-packs. But it's also the business where the licensing lines matter most, because the difference between "handyman work" and "licensed trade work" is law, not opinion.

Know the licensing lines first

This is the part you cannot skip:

  • Electrical and plumbing work is always licensed trade work. No exceptions, no matter how small the job looks.
  • Most states cap unlicensed building work by value. The threshold varies by state and changes, so check your state's current rules before you quote anything structural.
  • Waterproofing, gas and pest work have their own licences in most states.

Within the lines there's plenty of work: fencing and gates, deck maintenance, plaster patching, painting, flat-pack assembly, door and lock hardware, shelving, pressure cleaning, gutter cleaning and general repairs. Define your list and stick to it - and when a job crosses a line, refer it to a licensed tradie. They remember, and they refer back.

Setup and insurance

ABN, business name, and public liability insurance as the baseline. You already own most of the tools, which keeps startup costs low - the real investment is a reliable ute and the organisation to run jobs back to back.

Price with a minimum

Small jobs are the business, and small jobs are where pricing goes wrong. A $60 job across town is a loss once you count travel. Set a minimum call-out, charge in blocks (first hour, then per half hour), and quote fixed prices for the common jobs you can predict - gate repairs, flat-packs, deck oiling.

Steady handyman businesses are built on repeat local clients and property managers, not one-off ads.

Where the steady work comes from

Three sources keep a handyman busy: repeat homeowners who trust you, property managers with portfolios of rentals that constantly need small fixes, and local search. The first two come from reliability - show up when you said you would and they never leave.

The third needs setup. People search "handyman near me" and "handyman" plus their suburb, and the businesses shown first get the call. A complete Google Business Profile and a website listing your exact services and the suburbs you cover is what puts you there. Being specific matters - a page that says what you do and where you do it beats a generic "all handyman services" list every time.

If you're launching and want the name, domain, website and setup handled together, the Business Starter service is built for exactly that. Already established and need the website sorted? See the $45/week website.

Common questions

What work can a handyman legally do in Australia?
General repairs, maintenance, fencing, painting, patching and assembly are fine in most states, but electrical and plumbing are always licensed trades, and most states cap the value of unlicensed building work. Check your state's current rules - the thresholds differ and change.
How much does it cost to start a handyman business?
If you already own tools and a ute, very little - registration, insurance and marketing. The main costs are insurance, any tool gaps, and getting found online.
How do handymen get steady work?
Repeat homeowners, property managers, and local search. Reliability wins the first two; a Google Business Profile and a website naming your services and suburbs wins the third.
