What Does a Small Business Consultant Actually Do?
A good consultant shortens the learning curve. Here's what they actually do, what they cost, and how to tell if you need one.

Most small business owners don't need a consultant to tell them to work hard. What they need is someone who has seen a hundred businesses like theirs and can point at the two or three things that will actually move the needle. That's what a good small business consultant does - and it's also how you spot a bad one.
What a consultant actually does
The work varies, but it usually falls into a few buckets:
- Diagnosis. Looking at your numbers, your marketing and your processes to find where money and time are leaking.
- Strategy. Deciding what to focus on - which services, which customers, which suburbs - and what to stop doing.
- Systems. Setting up quoting, follow-up, booking and review processes so the business doesn't rely on you remembering everything.
- Accountability. Someone who checks in and makes sure the plan actually happens.
When it's worth the money
A consultant earns their fee when the cost of getting it wrong is bigger than their invoice. Common moments: you're starting out and want the structure right from day one, you're busy but not profitable, or you're about to spend serious money on marketing, staff or equipment and want a second set of eyes first.
It's usually not worth it if you already know exactly what to do and just haven't done it yet. No consultant can fix that.
What to look for
Ask what businesses like yours they've worked with, and what specifically changed. Be wary of anyone who leads with a framework or a course before they've asked about your numbers. The good ones ask a lot of questions before they give any answers.

The part most people skip: being findable
Plenty of consultants will help you with pricing and operations, then leave your marketing as "get a website and post on Facebook". But for most trade and service businesses, being found on Google is the single biggest lever there is. If your customers can't find you, the best-run business in the world still has an empty diary.
If you're at the starting-out stage, the Business Starter service bundles the setup, consulting and website side together. If you're already trading and the website is the weak link, the $45/week website covers the build, hosting, SEO foundations and ongoing management - with your first 5 weeks after launch free.
Before you hire a consultant
- You can clearly say what problem you want solved
- You've asked for examples of similar businesses they've helped
- You know the fee structure - hourly, project or retainer
- They've asked about your numbers before pitching solutions
- You know what 'success' looks like and how you'll measure it
- Your online presence is part of the conversation, not an afterthought

Talk to Mike About SEOCommon questions
- How much does a small business consultant cost in Australia?
- Typically $150 to $400+ per hour, or a fixed fee for a defined project. Some offer monthly retainers. The fee matters less than whether the advice pays for itself - ask what outcomes they've produced for similar businesses.
- Do I need a consultant to start a business?
- Not necessarily, but the setup stage is where mistakes are most expensive - wrong structure, wrong pricing, no plan for getting customers. Even a single session with someone experienced can save you months of trial and error.
- What's the difference between a consultant and a business coach?
- A consultant analyses your business and gives you a plan - sometimes they help implement it. A coach focuses more on you as the owner: mindset, habits and accountability. Many do a bit of both; what matters is whether their approach matches what you actually need.
