SEO for Plumbers: What Actually Ranks in Your Suburbs
The two sets of plumbing results on Google, and the order to fix things so your business shows up in the suburbs you actually work in.

Plumbers ask me the same question two ways: "why does the other bloke show up before me?" and "is SEO even worth it for a plumbing business?" Both have the same answer. Google runs two separate races for every plumbing search, and most plumbers have only entered one of them.

The two sets of results
Search "emergency plumber" on a phone and you'll see a map pack with three or four businesses, then a list of websites below it. They're ranked by different machinery:
- The map pack cares about your Google Business Profile - category, service area, reviews, photos, and how far you are from the person searching. A website helps here, but the profile does the heavy lifting.
- The website results care about your pages. Google can only rank pages, not businesses. If your entire website is a homepage, you're asking one page to win dozens of different searches.
Most plumbers I look at have a decent profile and a one-page website. That wins them a slice of the map pack and almost nothing else.
Fix it in this order
- Google Business Profile first. Right category ("Plumber"), service area set to your real suburbs, real photos of your work, opening hours that include your after-hours arrangements. If you haven't done this properly, this setup walkthrough covers it step by step.
- Reviews, steadily. Ten genuine reviews with suburb names in them outperforms two hundred collected in one week. Ask after every good job.
- A page per service. Blocked drains, hot water, leak detection, burst pipes, bathroom renovations - each gets its own page with real photos and honest guidance.
- A page per suburb or region. Not fifty thin pages - one solid page per area you genuinely work, naming the jobs you've done there. Location pages do help, but only when they carry real content.
- Technical basics. Fast on mobile, secure, no broken pages. Google won't rank a site that fights the person using it.
What plumbing content actually ranks
The pages that rank for plumbing searches answer the question the searcher typed. "Why is my hot water system leaking from the valve?" earns more traffic than "Welcome to Smith Plumbing, your trusted partner." Write the pages your customers need at 7pm on a Sunday:
- Emergency pages - burst pipes, no hot water, gas leaks
- Problem pages - blocked drains, leaking taps, low water pressure
- Cost pages - what a hot water replacement costs, typical call-out fees
- Local pages - your service, your suburb, your recent jobs
How long it takes
A new plumbing website usually starts appearing in map-pack and long-tail searches within weeks, and builds real ground over three to six months as reviews, pages and history stack up. Anyone promising page one in a fortnight is selling you something else. How long SEO takes explains the realistic timeline.
Plumber SEO checklist
- Google Business Profile: correct category, service area, photos
- Ask for a review after every good job
- A page for each service you offer
- A page for each suburb or region you work in
- Suburb names in your reviews and photo captions
- Website fast and working on a phone
- Cost and problem pages that answer real questions
- Consistent business name, address and phone everywhere online
If your website is the weak link, that's the part I build under plumber website design - a page per service and suburb, written for you, with the SEO foundations included. For the wider picture, the tradie's guide to SEO covers how all the pieces fit together.

Talk to Mike About SEOCommon questions
- Is SEO worth it for a one-van plumbing business?
- Yes - arguably more than for a big firm. You're not trying to rank Australia-wide, just in the handful of suburbs you drive. A focused profile and a dozen good pages can own a small area.
- Do I need to blog to rank as a plumber?
- Not in the diary-entry sense. What helps is a page per service and suburb, plus the occasional article answering a question your customers genuinely ask. Useful beats frequent.
- Can I rank in suburbs where I have no address?
- Yes, through the website results rather than the map pack. Service-area pages with real local content get you into those searches - that's exactly what they're for.
