Why Is My Website Not Converting?

A website with traffic but no enquiries is more frustrating than no website at all - you can see the interest arriving and evaporating. The good news is that non-converting sites fail for the same handful of reasons, and most are fixable in days, not months.

Every visitor who leaves without acting chose the path of least resistance - your job is to make acting easier than leaving.

The nine reasons, in order

  1. No clear next step. If your homepage doesn't say "call now" or "get a quote" within the first screen, you've left the decision to the visitor. Give one obvious action per page.
  2. Buried contact details. Your phone number should be tappable in the header on every page, not hiding in a footer. On mobile, a sticky call bar beats everything.
  3. Slow mobile pages. If your page takes five seconds to load, half your visitors are gone before your headline appears. Check whether it's time for a rebuild if speed fixes don't stick.
  4. Generic copy. "Quality service you can trust" describes every business in Australia. Name the trade, the service, the suburb and the problem in your first line.
  5. No proof. Reviews with names and suburbs, real job photos, licence numbers, warranty terms. Strangers buy from evidence, not enthusiasm.
  6. A form that asks too much. Name, phone, suburb, problem - done. Every extra field loses people. Test your own form monthly.
  7. Content about you, not them. Reorder every page around the customer's problem, your solution, your proof, then the ask.
  8. No second chance. Most visitors aren't ready to enquire on visit one. Clear calls to action on every page, and remarketing if you run ads, catch the ones who needed another nudge.
  9. Wrong visitors. 500 visitors searching "how to fix a leaking tap yourself" will never call you. Check that your traffic matches what you sell - ranking for the right searches matters more than ranking for many.

The five-minute diagnosis

Open your own site on your phone and check

  • Can you see what this business does within 3 seconds?
  • Is there a tappable phone number visible right now, without scrolling?
  • Does the page load before you get bored?
  • Is there a review with a real name and suburb on the page?
  • Could you finish the enquiry form one-handed in under a minute?
  • Would you, as a stranger, trust this business on this evidence?

Every "no" is a fix with a known price. If your site fails three or more, the fastest route is usually a rebuild done properly rather than a patch job - and if you're a tradie or local business, the most common tradie website mistakes will all sound familiar.

Common questions

What's a good conversion rate for a small business website?
For local service businesses, 2-5% of visitors making contact is a healthy target. If you're under 1%, the fixes above usually move it fastest - start with the call-to-action and page speed.
Should I add a live chat widget?
Only if someone can actually answer it. An unanswered chat box converts worse than a good form, and outsourced chat on a trade site reads as a lead-reselling operation. A tappable phone number does the same job honestly.
How do I know if my traffic is the problem, not the site?
Check what searches bring people in. If they're informational or from outside your service area, better targeting - not conversion tweaks - is the fix.
